Colombo takes first steps towards normality

Colombo and Gampaha districts yesterday took the first steps towards normality even as the quarantine curfew continued without a pause. Offices and institutions, Government and private, were permitted to begin their normal operations yesterday albeit with a limited staff under a Government plan to resume normal life in the Western Province and Puttalam District, where the curfew continued almost for two months. The public transport services were limited strictly to those heading to work and other essential requirements, with railway, bus and Security Forces personnel checking the bona fides of travellers.

They also ensured that passengers observed social distancing norms inside buses and trains. The temperature of travellers was checked at both the start and the end of the journey and also at their respective workplaces. Some workplaces also had disinfection chambers through which the workers were required to walk. They were also required to wash their hands at bus terminals, railway stations and also at their workplaces. Most places had provided wash basins and sanitizer stations for the convenience of workers.

Police and security officials said everything worked perfectly, though the usual checks on vehicles entering Colombo continued. They expect things to get smoother as the week goes on, with transport and security officials and employees getting used to the “New Normal” lifestyle.

Security Sector officials said that despite the opening up of vital sectors, anyone flouting curfew and quarantine regulations would be severely dealt with. Our photographers captured these scenes in Colombo as workers headed to their respective workplaces.
