Govt condemns campaign against Dr. P.B. Jayasundara

The Government condemned the allegations leveled against President's Secretary Dr. P.B. Jayasundara based on the personal request made by him from the public servants to donate their entire or part of May month's salary to the Widows' and Orphans' Pension Fund taking into consideration the crisis faced by the country as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Addressing a special media conference held at the Government Information Department, Co-Cabinet Spokesman, Technology, Innovation and Higher Education and Information and Communication Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardena said that as an experienced civil servant and the head of the public servants, he has the authority to make such request from the public servants.

The Minister said that the Government is now facing a huge financial crisis due to the non-functioning of three main income generating sources: Inland Revenue Department, Department of Customs and Excise Department. But the Government has many expenses including the payment public servants’ salaries, financial subsidies and other expenses.

Apart from that the Government has to secure at least US$ 5 billion to settle the installments and interest of foreign loans. Due to the non-functioning of two main sources of dollar earnings, textile exports and tourism, it is very difficult for the Government to manage all these expenses, the Minister pointed out.

"If the public servants agree to donate their salary or a part of it the Government would be able to narrow the budget gap. That is why the President's Secretary has made such a request. It’s only a personal request and only those public servants willing to donate their salaries will participate," said the Minister.

Being an example to the others, Dr. Jayasundara too has donated his May month's salary. So it is unfair to take political advantage by slinging mud at him, the Minister added.
