197 Sri Lankans arrive from Dubai

A group of Sri Lankans stranded in Dubai due to the Covid-19 outbreak returned yesterday morning to the country.

A special flight arranged by the national carrier SriLankan Airlines (UL226) arrived yesterday morning at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) with 197 locals repatriated from Dubai.

SriLankan Airlines Media Spokesperson Deepal Perera said, “The plane landed at 6 am yesterday and passengers were later escorted to the quarantine centre”. All the passengers and their luggage were disinfected by Air Force personnel.

Health Officials and security staff attached to the airport carried out the usual health protocols to detect if any of the passengers would be having early symptoms of the Covid-19 virus.

The repatriated Sri Lankans were then sent off to quarantine centres by the Air Force personnel.

He added, “The national carrier has flown down more than 2000 Sri Lankans living aboard since February (1) to May (5), and 17 UL flights were used for the special operations. There will be two more flights to Melbourne and Kuala Lumpur in the coming week”.

SriLankan Airlines had previously carried out several missions to bring back stranded Sri Lankans from various countries following the medical protocols to prevent the spread of the virus. SriLankan Airlines first embarked on a mission to bring back students from Wuhan, China.
