Former Rajan sportsman Gamini Gunawardena passes away

H.G. Gunawardena, popularly known as Gamini Gunawardena, former Senior DIG passed away at the age of 80 years.

An old boy of Dharmaraja College, Kandy he represented his school at Cricket, Soccer and Athletics.

After his school career he entered the University of Peradeniya where he continued his sports and after graduation he joined the Police Department as an Asst. Superintendent of Police in 1963.

Gunawardena served in several Police Divisions and wherever he went he encouraged the Police personnel to do sports and recreation. While in the Police service he was one of the scholarship holders who followed a Fullbright Scholarship at the Harvard University in U.S.A. in 1989.

The following year he undertook a Fullbright Research Course. He served in many parts of the country and his last station was in the Kandy Police Division. He retired as the Head of the Prime Minister’s Division in 1998. According to A.P. Gunaratne, the former Principal of Dharmaraja and Ananda College, who was with Gunawardena at the Jayathillake Hall of the University of Peradeniya he was a very religious and national minded person. His remains lie at 40/4 B, 3rd Lane, Thalakotuwa Gardens, Colombo 5. Funeral will be held today at the Borella Cemetery.

He leaves behind his wife Susila and only son Koshiya who is residing in Sydney, Australia.
