Foreign Employment Agencies seek govt assistance

Association of Licenses Foreign Employment Agency of Sri Lanka (ALFEA) is requesting the government to help their employees who are in financial difficulty due to the impact of the coronavirus.

There are currently 1 .7 million workers overseas and over 90% of them are recruited through our Recruitment Agents.

They migrants provide around $ 8 billion remittance every year to Sri Lanka. In addition, $ 3 billion has been paid to our Foreign Employment Agencies as service charges.”

Issuing a press release General Secretary of the Association M.F.M Arshad, says that there are over 100, 000 employed directly and indirectly in the sector.

 “Due to the coronavirus impact the foreign employment demands for Sri Lanka have been halted. This has resulted in shutting down the employment agencies disabling the employment and livelihood of thousands of people engaged in various services.”

“Hence we now request from the President, Prime Minister and the Government to provide relief to the industry similar to tourism industry.”

Foreign Employment Agencies started in Sri Lanka more than four decade ago and this is the first time in the history that we are appealing from the government for relief.
