Public transport seating options under discussion

Passenger Transport Management Ministry is exploring possibilities of getting passengers according to the number of seats available in buses operating in all the Provinces except the Western Province from May 11.

Passenger Transport Management Minister Mahinda Amaraweera has advised the Secretary to the Ministry to send a letter to the Director General of Health Services, Dr. Anil Jasinghe and require the recommendations in this regard.

The GMOA during the recent discussion with Ministry officials has also stressed the need of subjecting to the recommendations of health authorities before implementing this decision. Therefore, the Minister said that permission to transport passengers according to the seats available in buses can be granted to buses operating all other Provinces except Western Province only if the health authorities approved the proposal.

Minster Amaraweera made these remarks during the function held at Nugegoda, Udahamulla bus depot yesterday to provide mechanical equipment worth of Rs.365 million required for repairing buses at 120 islandwide bus depots and 12 central workshops.
