FR petition against General Election to be taken up on Monday

The Fundamental Rights (FR) petition filed by an attorney seeking an order quashing the Extraordinary Gazette notification declaring the General Election on June 20 is to be taken up before Supreme Court for support on May 11.

Attorney-at-Law Charitha Gunaratne, the son of former Central Province Governor Maithri Gunaratne had filed this petition seeking a declaration that the Gazette notification in question is unconstitutional.

The petitioner has cited Election Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya, its members President’s Counsel N.J. Abeysekara and Prof.S. Rathnajeevan H.Hoole, Secretary to the President P.B. Jayasundara, Director General of Health Services Dr. Anil Jasinghe and the Attorney General as the respondents.
