Plans afoot to deal with monsoon amidst pandemic

The Director General of the Disaster Management Center Major General Sudantha Ranasinghe has directed relevant district level disaster management units to look into the preparations of the stakeholder institutions involved in disaster management, to minimize the damages to the lives and property of the people that could be caused due to the southwest monsoon.

It was recently brought to the attention of the government, of the difficulty of managing the disaster situations that may occur during the southwest monsoon rains during the current pandemic situation in the country. It was also pointed out that any such disaster situation should be dealt with in accordance with the guidelines issued by the Health Department.

The Department of Meteorology has forecast that the southwest monsoon of 2020 is likely to begin in the third week of May.

Accordingly, the Ratnapura District Disaster Management Coordinating Committee meeting was held at the District Secretariat under the patronage of the Director General of the Disaster Management Center and the District Secretary of Ratnapura today (04).

Representatives of Sri Lanka Army and Police, Local Government Commissioner's Office, Provincial Education Director, Department of Agriculture Development, Provincial Cooperative Department, National Building Research Organization, Sri Lanka Telecom, Electricity Board, Provincial Road Development Authority and NGOs were present at the committee meeting. The representatives discussed the corporate risk plans that each agency intends to implement in order to mitigate the risk of future disasters caused by the southwest monsoon with the COVID 19 disaster situation.

At this meeting, the Director General of the Disaster Management Center discussed in detail of the corporate preparedness plans in order to cope more effectively with the disaster situation.
