JVP will not attend May 4 meeting - AKD

The JVP will not attend the meeting of 225 MPs of the previous Parliament convened by Prime Minster Mahinda Rajapaksa at Temple Trees on May 4, JVP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said.

He said that the above decision of the party has been communicated to the Prime Minister in writing.

Speaking at an online event to mark the May Day, the JVP Leader opined that the looming constitutional crisis could only be solved either by reconvening Parliament or by consulting the Supreme Court.

“The people’s mandate to the President and his Government is to work within the constitutional framework. There is debate over the constitutionality of incurring public expenditure from May 1, and the inability to convene Parliament before the end of this month. The laws of the country should be respected. If the intention is to seek the opinions of parties, a Party Leaders’ Meeting would do,” he said.

He observed that the JVP has been giving its voluntary support to fight COVID-19 right from the beginning, adding that it produced and donated Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the tri-force and police personnel and ambulance drivers, and participated in new constructions at hospital premises and disinfection of public places. He also noted that the one-time payment of Rs 5,000 was not enough for the needy families to meet their basic needs.
