Communist Party of Sri Lanka May Day message:

Time to look for alternatives to neo-liberal policies

Communists see this global crisis and calamity not merely as a result caused by another deadly virus but also as inevitable consequence of inhuman neo-liberal policies of the political economy. The pandemic COVID – 19, during the last four months of its speedy spread across the world, has already revealed the criminal nature of neo-liberal strategies and policies and has also opened up opportunities to look forward for better alternatives, said Comrade DEW Gunasekara, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Sri Lanka issuing a statement on May Day 2020.

The Statement: “The Communist Party of Sri Lanka expresses its warmest fraternal greetings of solidarity with the ongoing struggles of the working people across the world on the occasion of the 130th Anniversary of the International Day of Labour – May Day.

Historically, May Day came into effect in the year 1890 on the strength of a resolution moved by Fredrick Engels at the First Session of the Second International of the Communist Movement. Unlike on previous occasions, it is not possible to commemorate this significant day this year due to the prevailing conditions brought about COVID – 19.

The impact of the COVID – 19 is so strong that the public health system even in the developed countries has totally collapsed and cannot protect human safety.

We, as Communists, see this global crisis and calamity not merely as a result caused by another deadly virus but also as inevitable consequence of inhuman neo-liberal policies of the political economy.

In this new situation, millions of working people have lost their lives, jobs and other sources of livelihoods. Those suffering from poverty, unemployment and marginalization are alarmingly increasing.

The left movement of Sri Lanka has commemorated this historic May Day uninterruptedly since 1933, under varying conditions and circumstances. However, it is not possible to mark this significant day in a fitting manner due to the prevailing situation caused by COVID – 19.

The pandemic COVID – 19, during the last four months of its speedy spread across the world, has already revealed the criminal nature of neo-liberal strategies and policies and has also opened up opportunities to look forward for better alternatives.

Sri Lanka to its credit has been able to combat and control this deadly virus on account of tis efficient Public Health system. The role played by our Health Services, Security Services and the Public Services in general is deeply appreciated. The presence of a viable state sector in the financial system of the country is a supplementary factor in our favour.

The Left and Progressive forces which pioneered to set up the Public Sector feel happy that their indefatigable efforts to defend the state sector against the neoliberalist onslaught were not in vain.

We take this opportunity to salute the people of China, Vietnam and Cuba, the socialist states for their dynamic and humanist role in the battle against COVID – 19, providing their advice, experience, expertise to the sister countries regardless of ideological or political differences.
