Govt paying special attention to workers – Dr Bandula Gunawardane

The Government has paid special attention to solve the issues faced by working class in the country as well as the migrant workers who have been badly affected due to the COVID-19 outbreak, Co-Cabinet Spokesman Information and Communication Minister Dr Bandula Gunawardane said.
Addressing a special media conference held yesterday at the Government Information Department, Dr Gunawardane said that the global working community has lost the opportunity to celebrate this year's May Day due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Workers across the globe are suffering from various issues that have been resulted due to this global pandemic.
"COVID-19 is the biggest menace that the whole world has to undergo since World War II. The great depression had started after World War II leaving much of the world unemployed and desperate." he said.
The Minister instructed the workers to submit their grievances including salary issues, unemployment and other issues to the Department of Labour Relations though their special Web page. Migrant workers can submit their grievances via 24 hour hotline 1989.
Families of migrant workers have also been instructed to meet the divisional secretary and submit their grievances.
Meanwhile, the Labour Department is conducting a survey regarding the private sector establishments that have been affected due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This survey is being conducted to enable the government to take measures to assist these private sector businesses and companies through this crisis and protecting the jobs of the employees of these companies. Therefore, all private sector businesses and companies are requested to log onto the Labour Department web site and fill in the survey form online and submit it prior to May 03. This survey is being conducted on the advice of Minister Dinesh Gunawardena under the directives of the Ministry Secretary D.M. Sarath Abayagunawardena under the supervision of the Labour Commissioner General A. Wimalaweera.
