Easter attacks: Families urge justice for victims

In a bid to force the Government to ensure that those responsible for the Easter Sunday terror attacks are brought to book the Catholics of Sri Lanka are planning on staging a protest.

Convening a media briefing yesterday, the Catholic Priests forum of Negombo said the media briefing was only the start of their struggle to ensure that the perpetrators of the Easter Sunday attacks face justice and they intend to go further and stage a protest march.

“The Catholic Church and the people will be compelled to hold peace protests if no one is brought to justice soon,” Fr Cyril Gamini said.

The media briefing was held yesterday at the St. Sebastian’s Church, Katuwapitiya, Negombo and Fr. Gamini noted, “ We could not hold the protest on the first year anniversary due to the COVID-19 pandemic but we would do so when the crisis ends.”

Also he said police and the intelligence units should not surrender to undue influence and pressure but should try to bring to book those who are responsible for the attacks and also those who neglected prior warnings that were made available to them.

Also speaking on this occasion a father who lost both his children in the attack said that he has confidence in the President and believes that he will ensure that justice is served.

All those who had lost their loved ones in the Easter Sunday attacks had just one desire in common and that was to bring to book those who were responsible, those who supported and funded these attacks without delay. They claim that although one year has passed since the Easter Sunday Attack, still the relevant authorities have failed to bring those who are responsible for it to the courts and to ensure that justice is served. Hence the Catholic priests of the Negombo Region had organised this media conference as a reminder to the authorities that the families of the victims are still awaiting justice for their lost loved ones, they said.
