SLPP suspends Sevanagala PS Member

The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) has suspended the party membership of Thanamalwila Pradeshiya Sabha member R. A. Ranaweera who was arrested in connection with the Sevanagala child abuse case. SLPP Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam in a press release yesterday said that the letter of suspension has already been issued and that the PS member would soon be expelled from the party after a disciplinary inquiry. The PS member and four others were arrested on charges of sexually abusing a 13-year old child suffering from Down’s Syndrome. The suspects have been remanded till April 16 after being produced before Court. “The SLPP is a party with thorough discipline and we expect the same from all party members. We have emphasized this fact when handing over nominations from the party, and even in the past we have expelled and stripped the members of their positions in the party when they did not obey the party rules,” Kariyawasam said.
