The Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs has taken a decision for their entire staff to donate a day’s salary to the Presidential Task Force to support the government in its fight against Covid-19.

Secretary of the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs K.D. Ruwanchandra said, “all the Sports and Youth Affairs activities have been stopped due to the Corona epidemic and we are doing our works from home and conducting meetings via online video conferences.”

Ruwanchandra further said, “Minister Dullas Alahaperuma initiated for donating the per day salary from both ministries with support of the entire staff who agreed to join the worthy cause.”

“Apart from that the Ministry of Sports has decided to give the Ministry hostel that can accommodate 500 to the Colombo Special Task Force (STF) to conduct their operational works. They have also given the Sports Ministry owned vehicles to the Ministry of Health to support for the lack of transport facilities,” said Ruwanchandra.

“I request all athletes to conduct their work outs and the trainings in their home. We are also conducting educational awareness programs and home quarantine motivational programs for the athletes via social media,” he said.

The secretary also said that the Ministry of Sports had recruited six foreign coaches for the respective sports and their salaries and allowances have been already paid until March.

“The government has taken all measures to control the spread of the Coronavirus with the least inconvenience to the public. We need to appreciate the commitment and dedication of the doctors, nurses and the entire health service, the tri-forces and police. I request all the stake holders of the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs to follow the instructions of the government and support its battle against the Corona epidemic faced globally,” said Ruwanchandra.
