Lanka’s social distancing efforts show success

The latest Community Mobility Report for Sri Lanka compiled by Google, the US-based Internet search giant, has shown that Social Distancing efforts adopted of the Government from the early days of the pandemic are comparatively very successful.
The Google Community Mobility Reports depict the growing and shrinking trends in a number of activities of people during the COVID-19 pandemic, in an effort to assist Governments to assess the success of social distancing moves followed for public safety.  
According to the Google Community Mobility Report for Sri Lanka, in comparison with other South Asian countries such as India, Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh, Sri Lanka leads with better rates in social distancing efforts. In Sri Lanka, the mobility trends for places such as restaurants, cafes, shopping centers, theme parks, museums, libraries, and movie theaters shows a drop down (compared to the baseline) of -86%, whereas other SAARC countries show only a drop between -60%-78%.
According to the report the mobility trends for places like grocery markets, food warehouses, farmers markets, specialty food shops, drug stores and pharmacies have dropped by -87% in Sri Lanka while the mobility trends for places like national parks, public beaches, marinas, dog parks, plazas and public gardens have also dropped by more than 50 percent.
Mobility trends for places like public transport hubs such as subway, bus, and train stations records a minus 78% compared to the baseline and a minus 50% is recorded for places of work in Sri Lanka.
The report also marked the mobility trends for places of residence have increased by +32% in the country.
“These reports show how visits and length of stay at different places change compared to a baseline. We calculate these changes using the same kind of aggregated and anonymized data used to show popular times for places. We include categories that are useful to social distancing efforts as well as access to essential services,” Google said.
