Harsh penalties urged for curfew pass misuse

Industrial Exports, Investment Promotion, Tourism and Aviation Minister Prasanna Ranathunga requested the Police and the Security Forces to take stern action against citizens found misusing the curfew passes allocated to them and using them beyond the validity.

The passes are being issued by the respective Police station(s) are only for the movement of people engaged in essential services. However, several instances of the misuse of curfew passes individually and some in groups have been reported during this period.

“Therefore, legal action should be taken against such people for violating curfew regulations imposed to prevent spreading of coronavirus in the country," he added.

He made these remarks during the meeting convened to discuss with the relevant stakeholders regarding the mechanisms for providing essential services to the people in the Gampaha district yesterday at Gampaha District Secretariat.

He instructed officials to take steps to issue curfew passes through the special Committee comprising of Divisional Secretariats, local government authorities, Municipal Councils, Co-operative societies, Police stations and health authorities in the district.
