COVID-19 count now at 101 - Dr. Anil Jayasinghe - UPDATE

Speaking at the National operation Centre to combat covid-19 Dr Anil Jayasinghe Director General of Health Services said that as of today 101 COVID-19 cases have been confirmed in Sri Lanka.
"As of today four new cases of COVID-19 have been recorded, most of them are returnees from Italy while the other individual is a returnee from the USA, " he said. " It is clear to us that most of the COVID-19 cases that have been confirmed in Sri Lanka have been from returnees who had arrived to the country."
He said that Colombo, Gampaha and Kalutara have been identified as high-risk zones because the majority of cases are from these three districts.
"10 individuals are from Gampaha, 21 from Colombo and 13 from Kalutara," he added.
Dr Jayasinhe requests the general public to assist the government's efforts to contain the spread of the global pandemic.
"One of the most effective measures to contain the spread of COVID-19 is to maintain social distance hence we request the public to ensure that a distance of at least one metre is maintained even during the hours when curfew is lifted," he said.
He said that it was commendable to note that many people had paid heed to the request by the government and health officials by maintaining a distance of earlier today when curfew was lifted and individuals were out purchasing essentials.
He however noted that while this was evident at supermarkets people congregated in large numbers smaller grocery stores. "Regardless of the size of I humbly request store owners and shopkeepers to assist and request Shoppers to ensure that this distance is maintained."
He added that when curfew is lifted and when people have to return to work to follow this rule as much as possible.
"COVID-19 spreads through individual who serve as vectors, hence if we can maintain this distance it would be useful in containing its spread," he said.
Dr. Jayasinhe speaking at the conference confirmed that a community health physician at IDH had contracted COVID-19 however the said physician does not check up on patients but maintains a dispensary at the IDH hospital.
100 confirmed COVID-19 cases reported in SL - (15:30)
According to the latest statistics issued by the Epidemiology Unit today (24th Tuesday 2:45pm), there are a total of 100 confirmed COVID-19 patients and 229 under observation.
