New Poll day will be announced via Gazette - Commissioner General of Elections

Elections Commissioner General Saman Sri Rathnayake yesterday confirmed that the declaration of a new election date will be made via a gazette notice.

He told Daily News that this will not happen within two weeks from the date of the election, which has been postponed. Rathnayake was contacted by Daily News following yesterday’s press conference at the Election Secretariat, where the Chairman of the Election Commission, Mahinda Deshapriya announced the Commission’s decision not to hold the Parliamentary Election on April 25 as planned.

Rathnayake stated that under the Parliamentary Elections Act, it was the Commissioner’s decision to announce another day for a poll, and that day would not be earlier than the fourteenth day after the elections.

He said, “It could be in one month, or even two, depending on the specification of the Commissioner of Election - what he will notify in the Gazette.”

“First of all, the Election Commission will publish the postponement of the parliamentary election on April 25 in a Gazette notice as required, most probably on Monday,” he said.”It will then declare a new date for the parliamentary elections.”
