‘No sub-standard canned fish distributed’

No canned fish consignment which the Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI) deemed unfit for human consumption was released to the local market, Cabinet Spokesman and Higher Education, Technology and Innovation Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardena said yesterday.

Responding to a question by a journalist at the Cabinet press briefing at the Government Information Department, he said that the SLSI recently detected 80 container loads of imported canned fish which were unfit for human consumption.

He added that directives were given to re-send those consignments and that the container loads were being re-shipped as of yesterday.

“Some have started spreading false rumours on social media that those stocks have been released to the local market and that is why the Government lowered the canned fish price. All canned fish at local retail shops and supermarkets have been certified by the SLSI. We urge the users of social media to behave in a responsible manner at this critical hour when the country is hit by a health crisis. Recently, several individuals were arrested for spreading false news on social media. If anybody has any doubt, complain to the relevant authority without propagating falsehood,” he said.
