Crysbro joins Agriculture Ministry to empower small-scale poultry farmers

A leading Sri Lankan poultry producer Crysbro, in its latest initiative to bolster the rural economy, is collaborating with the Ministry of Agriculture in an effort to aid small-scale poultry farmers in the town of Mahiyanganaya in the Badulla District through a smallholder agribusiness partnership programme.

The project aims to develop new poultry farm infrastructure and equip these farm owners with the physical resources required to keep their businesses profitable.

The programme was launched recently with the additional involvement of the International Monetary Fund and has already benefited about 100 small-scale poultry farmers.

The Ministry of Agriculture will allocate Rs. 500,000 to a small-scale poultry farmer under the ‘Tharuna Diriya’ agribusiness co-operation scheme.

The amount will serve as a loan which will enable farmers to start a new business or expand their current enterprise by adding to infrastructure such as nets, roofing sheets, foil cover and temperature control equipment.

The loan offered through this programme will be charged at a minimum interest rate of 6.5%. Further information and approval can be obtained from the project’s Regional Coordinator Buddhika Wijekoon or at the Crysbro regional office.

Despite Crysbroequipping small-scale farmers withpoultry feed and water containers, some from this group cannot afford to sustain or build the basic infrastructure required for their operations. This is where the novel programme hopes to make a difference in the lives of these ambitious men and women.

Crysbro Business Unit Uva and East Head Sumith Abeysinghe said, “Annually, there are a large number of people who approach us looking to work in the poultry business.

However, fewer than 10% of them can afford the infrastructure necessary for such a commitment.

This project will form a pipeline for the creation of several new entrepreneurs and contribute greatly to poverty alleviation. As Sri Lanka’s leadingpoultry company, we have made it our mission to empower communities across the country and uplift Sri Lanka’s economy. Supporting this particular programme goes a long way in achieving this goal.”

Established in 1972 with just 100 chicks and a deep desire to be a market leader in quality and innovation, Crysbro has emerged as Sri Lanka’s first and most sophisticated, fully vertically-integrated poultry producer.
