Hiriyala: Residents commend President’s steps

The low-income families in the Hiriyala area commend the steps taken by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to reduce the prices of two essential food items, dhal and canned fish with effect from last Wednesday (18).

A long queue of customers who came to purchase these food items at the reduced prices could be seen at the Ibbagamuwa C.W.E. outlet yesterday (18) morning.

A kilogramme of dhal is sold at a concessionary price of Rs. 65 at these outlets whereas the normal market price of one kilogramme of dhal is Rs. 140. A salmon tin is sold at Rs. 100 though its marked price is Rs. 300.

A person from a low-income family in the Wewsirigama model village said the reduction of prices of these essential food items is a great relief for the low-income masses.

But they say black marketers attempt to purchase these food items, with the aim of selling them at high prices in the forthcoming New Year season.
