Over 180,000 acres of paddy fields will be cultivated during the Yala season 2020 in the Ampara district and the activities have begun on March 15.

Agricultural and Irrigation Department officials request Ampara district farmers to complete their paddy sowing operation for the Yala season-2020 before April -10.

Arrangements are made to issue fertilizer to the farmers through farmer organizations. Farmers are already informed of this arrangement. The cultivation meeting for the Yala season, attended by the officials from the departments of Agriculture and Irrigation, Farmer Organization representatives and other interested partners, was held at the Akkaraipattu Divisional Secretariat presided over by Ampara District Secretary D.M.L.Bandaranayakke recently.

About 29,000 acres of paddy fields will be cultivated during the Yala season in Akkaraipattu, Addalaichenai, Deegawapi and Weerayadi irrigation divisions in Akkaraipattu Irrigation region in the district. Sugarcane and subsidiary food crops will be cultivated during the Yala season.

They obtain seed paddy from their seed paddy processing centres in the Ampara district. Most farmers will cultivate red rice in the region.

During the past seasons, there was a good demand and market for the red rice variety.
