General Election nominations close today

Acceptance of nominations from recognised political parties for the upcoming General election will conclude at 12 noon today.

Elections Commissioner General Saman Sri Ratnayake said forty four recognized political parties and 31 independent groups had handed over nominations to the respective returning officers yesterday.

Acceptance of nominations from recognised political parties and independent groups began on March 12. Public can make objections over the candidates contesting the election after the nominations close.The accepted list of candidates contesting the election will be gazetted. Ratnayake said 264 independent groups had placed deposits to contest the election.
