A total of 50 confirmed COVID-19 patients and 212 suspected patients in 17 state hospitals are reported as per latest statistics issued by the Epidemiology Unit yesterday (18) morning.

There are 81 suspected patients at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID), four at Kandy National Hospital, eight at Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital, four individuals at Karapitiya Teaching Hospital, 15 at Negambo DGH, 20 at Kurunegala Teaching Hospital, 13 at Gampaha DGH, 13 at Negambo DGH, three children at Lady Ridgeway Hospital (LRH), 13 at Ragama Teaching Hospital, one at Jaffna Teaching Hospital, seven at Ratnapura Teaching Hospital, two at Badulla PGH, three at Colombo South Teaching Hospital (Kalubowila), 13 at National Hospital of Sri Lanka (NHSL), two at Batticaloa Teaching Hospital and 24 at Polonnaruwa DGH.

According to the Health Ministry sources, in the current Sri Lankan context, there is no scientific justification to wear face mask routinely by the public. Health experts say that it is good if sick people (sick with flu, influenza etc.) and the people with significantly low immunity due to special health conditions such as recent major surgeries, undergoing chemotherapy, suffering from diseases such as diabetes can wear face masks while visiting public places. The people should refrain from visiting public or crowded places.

According to the instructions issued by Health Promotion Bureau (HPB) Director Dr. Karunapema, the people should wash hands often with soap and avoid touching the face, nose, mouth and eyes before washing or sanitizing (with alcohol based sanitizer) hands. The mouth and nose should be covered with disposable tissue or the inner side of the elbow when coughing and sneezing.

The used tissue should be disposed in a bin with a lid. If a person suffers from symptoms such as fever, cough, cold, sore throat or difficulty in breathing, he/she should avoid visiting public places and crowded places. He/she should consult a doctor immediately and inform the doctor about any foreign tours gone in during past 15 days or any close contact had with a person who returned from abroad.

According to the situation report issued by the WHO on Tuesday 17, a total of 7,426 people had been died due to COVID-19 and 179,112 cases had been reported from 159 countries in the world, the sources added.
