Police curfew in 11 Police Divisions

Nominations process not affected:

A Police curfew was imposed in eleven Police Divisions yesterday in a bid to combat the spread of COVID-19. DIG Ajith Rohana said the decision was taken after considering the risk factors in the area, where many recent returnees from Italy and other parts of Europe live.

Announcing the curfew, DIG Ajith Rohana said curfew was imposed in 11 Police Divisions across the Puttalam District from 4.30 pm yesterday until further notice. Accordingly, Puttalam, Anamaduwa, Kalpitiya, Karuwalagaswewa, Mundalama, Nawagaththegama, Pallama, Vanathavilluwa, Udappuwa, Norochcholai, and Saliyawewa came under Police lockdown. The curfew was also imposed on the Chilaw, Dankotuwa, Koswatta, Madampe, Marawila, Wennappuwa and Arachchikattuwa Police Divisions belonging to the Chilaw Police Division and on the Kochchikade Police division in Negombo.

However DIG Rohana said the Police curfew imposed in these areas will not affect the handing over of nominations for the upcoming General Election. Accordingly, political party representatives will be allowed to visit the relevant District Secretariats to hand over nominations today in the areas under Police Curfew. “They will be allowed to proceed once they inform the Policemen on duty,” he said.

According to the DIG, public transport and essential services will also be facilitated to pass through these areas. Those going to the airport will also not be affected.

“However traveling on the roads during the curfew and engaging in other activities publicly will not be allowed,” he said, adding that this step was being taken in accordance with the Quarantine and Prevention of Diseases Ordinance.
