Magistrate issues order against 65 returnees

Marawila Chief Magistrate and District Judge Heshantha De Mel yesterday ordered 65 persons who returned to the country from a number of countries including Italy not to leave their homes unless absolutely necessary.

The Chief Magistrate issued this order when Naththandiya Medical Officer of Health Dr.Upul Jayathilake informed court that the 65 returnees have not been quarantined and they did not comply with the instructions given by the health authorities

The MOH told court that their non compliance with the instructions given by the health officials put the entire population at higher risk to the COVID - 19 outbreak.

He sought a court order to ensure the health of 68,402 people living in his MOH division under the Penal Code.

The Chief Magistrate ordered to issue the relevant order to these 65 persons separately after taking into consideration the lengthy submission made by the Dr.Jayathilake.

These returnees were strictly ordered to obtain prior approval from the MOH, if they want to leave their home for an emergency.
