Action against identified rumour mongers

Police are investigating 40 persons for spreading rumours over social media and two such persons have been identified, DIG Ajith Rohana said. Addressing the media briefing held at the National Operation Centre for the prevention of Covid-19 outbreak (NOCPCO), he said two suspects were arrested previously. He also noted that all persons who arrived in the country from March 1 to 15 should register with the police. However, he noted that there was no requirement for persons to visit police stations personally, but could register by calling the telephone numbers given. He said that since establishing the hotlines the police had received around 3,000 calls regarding returnees evading quarantine and 548 persons had registered with the police so far.
