Suspect arrested for selling reptiles

A suspect involved in selling lizards and Brahman-lizards under the guise of selling pets was arrested with 64 lizards and 109 Brahman-lizards in Kalutara South on Monday (16) by the Kalutara Divisional Anti-Corruption Unit.

He had been packing reptiles into bags and boxes at a house in Kalutara South at the time of the arrest. He has received the animals from drug addicts in Kalutara South and suburbs.

The suspect has paid Rs. 500 to each reptile and one of the reptiles was later sold to a resident of Puttalam for Rs. 2,500, police said.

The recipient in Puttalam had sold the reptiles to Japan at very high prices. The 30-year-old suspect will be produced before the Kalutara Magistrate’s Court, police said.
