PM to halt public meetings

In light of concerns over the spread of the COVID-19 and in an effort to curb the risk ordinary citizens would be exposed to, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has decided to reconsider hosting of all public meetings. His decision comes hot on the heels of a government decree to postpone all public meetings and events for the next two weeks.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka People’s Alliance (PA) district leaders have also decided to postpone all public meetings for the next two weeks. Accordingly, on the instructions of Matara District Leader and Minister Dullas Alahapperuma, political meetings in the Matara District have been postponed indefinitely.

Gampaha District Leader Prasanna Ranatunga has told officials to cease all political rallies of the SLPP for the next two weeks. Accordingly, the Dompe and Biyagama electoral council meetings and the Divulapitiya Women and Youth Council meetings which were scheduled to be held yesterday were canceled.

A similar decision has been taken by former Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa regarding political rallies in the Hambantota district.
