No postponement of polls - EC

The Elections Commission yesterday assured that no decision has been taken so far to postpone the 2020 Parliamentary Polls, billed for April 25, on account of COVID -19. There will be no postponement of the polls, Commissioner General of Elections Saman Sri Ratnayake told the Daily News. His assurance followed a meeting between the Elections Commission and the National Health Authorities yesterday morning at the EC Secretariat.

He said the meeting was conducted by the Elections Commission to determine the measures and precautions that should be taken by the EC during the run up to the polls. The EC however had all the legal provisions to postpone the polls, should the need arise. “We need not consult the health authorities for such a drastic decision,” he said. “We summoned the meeting to get explicit directions from the Health Authorities as to how we should operate during the run up to the elections as we are working in a very complex background,” he said. The Health Authorities have also given guidelines to the EC on certain health parameters that should be met during the nominations and elections process.
