The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) had arrested two persons for spreading false information regarding the COVID Coronavirus on social media.

The Police have identified 40 suspects who were engaged in spreading misinformation related to the COVID Coronavirus, said DIG Ajith Rohana, addressing a media briefing on the Coronavirus issue at the Government Media Centre yesterday. He said the two suspects are residents of the Ragama and Bandaragama areas. They would be produced before court shortly. DIG Ajith Rohana said one of the suspects, Niminda Priyadharshana was arrested in Bandaragama last morning. He had repeatedly posted false information on Facebook claiming that there were several deaths in Sri Lanka as a result of the COVID Coronavirus. He said the other suspect, Dushmantha Amila had also spread similar false information on social media.

He was arrested in Ragama last afternoon. DIG Ajith Rohana said that investigations are ongoing regarding the nearly 40 other suspects for similar charges, adding that more arrests are imminent.
