Legal action against businessman who failed to obtain COVID-19 treatment

Legal action would be initiated against a COVID-19 patient who had evaded getting himself admitted to a government hospital despite being advised to do so, said Health Services Director General Dr. Anil Jasinghe.

He was addressing a media briefing on the developments of the COVID -19 Coronavirus pandemic at the Government Information Department yesterday.

He said the patient had travelled to Germany and returned to Sri Lanka with another man who had later tested positive for the virus.

Dr. Jasinghe said that while one person had got admitted to hospital for the virus the other man, a gem businessman from Mount Lavinia, had ignored medical advice and was absconding.

However, Health officials had tracked him down and advised him to get admitted to the Infectious Diseases Hospital (IDH) in Angoda.

However, he had refused to do so and instead had sought medical treatment at a private hospital. Despite many attempts being made to contact him and convince him to get admitted to hospital, all attempts proved futile and at times his wife had answered the phone but had not cooperated.

Thereafter, Dr. Jasinghe said that the intelligence agencies had also been alerted and he had eventually got himself admitted to the Kalubowila Hospital. He was then transferred to the IDH hospital.

Dr.Jasinghe said that such irresponsible actions were unfortunately most frequently by the more affluent classes than the lower classes of society. However, he said that legal action will be taken against the businessman and his wife for their irresponsible behaviour which put the public at risk.
