Government holiday won’t be extended – Public Administration Secretary

Public Administration Ministry Secretary S. Hettiarachchi said that the special holiday declared by the government would not be extended and a final decision in this regard will be made after monitoring the situation.

He was speaking at a media briefing held at the Government Information Department with regard to the government declaring a special holiday.

He said as the situation has not shown signs of worsening, it had been decided not to declare the next few days as holidays.

Hettiarachchi said it was compulsory for all staff officers to report for duties and they have the authority to summon the staff required to carry out their activities, but the rest have been given a concession.

However, he said that all essential services are currently functioning as usual despite the holiday being declared.

The Secretary further noted that all government officials who have travelled overseas and intend on returning home within the next few days should self-quarantine if they have any symptoms of the Coronavirus or they could get admitted to any on the quarantine centres.

“In such circumstances, they would be granted 14 days paid leave,” he said.

He also said that information offices should be set up at regional levels and Divisional Secretaries should take measures to set up such centres.

Responding to media queries whether leave would be granted to state sector employees who do not report to work, he said this situation would be evaluated in the future.

He also stated that measures would be taken to provide soap or hand wash to all government institutions in the future and a mechanism would be devised for this purpose.
