Galle Port closed for disembarkation

Disembarkation at Galle Port is prohibited with immediate effect as a precaution against the spread of coronavirus, Southern Province Governor Willie Gamage said on Sunday (15).

He made the above announcement at a meeting held with provincial administrators and officials at the Governor’s Secretariat on Sunday evening.

The four district secretaries of the Province, Southern Province Chief Secretary, Southern Province Senior DIG, provincial heads of the Tri Forces and Southern Province Director of Health Services were among the officials who participated in the meeting.

The Governor disclosed that 53 persons suspected to have Covid-19 were reported within the province out of which none was found to be positive.

For the observation of the suspected cases, quarantine facilities have been provided at Karapitiya Teaching Hospital and Hambantota Hospital and if the need arises, separate isolation wards would be established at eight other base hospitals managed by the Provincial Council, he said.

Steps have been taken to cancel all public gatherings and festivities where people would gather.

A discussion with the officials of Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) and Private Bus Owners’ Association will be held to discuss procedures for sanitization of all public and private commuter buses and vans, the Governor said.

The officials of Tri-Forces assured that they have already identified two appropriate locations for the quarantining people: one in Dadella in Galle district and the other in Akuressa in the Matara district.
