Youth found dead at workplace

A 26-year-old youth working in an optician’s shop in Dambulla town was found dead on the upper floor of the shop on Sunday.

Dambulla Police who were called in by other employees of the shop said they suspect that death was due to inhalation of toxic gas.

The deceased was identified as Ramachanrdan Balamurali from Puchchakeni, Batticaloa.

It transpires that on the day of the incident, the power supply had been halted due to a repair of the major power line. So a generator was used in the shop to provide electricity.

As the employees were getting ready to go home, Balamurali had gone to the upper floor to disconnect the generator. As he did not return, another female employee had gone there to check on him. She saw that Balamurali was lying unconscious. So, the employees called the Dambulla Police.

Dambulla Acting Magistrate Jayampathi Rathnadivakara visited the scene and ordered the police to submit a comprehensive medical report regarding the death, after the Matale judicial medical officer had performed the autopsy.

Matale district special crime investigation unit in collaboration with Dambulla Police are conducting further investigations.
