The SLPP, the SLFP, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) and the UNP have requested their political supporters not to organise any public rallies and meetings in the Kurunegala and Puttalam districts until further notice due to the outbreak of coronavirus.

This decision was taken unanimously by all parties respecting the government’s appeal to do so, Roads and Highways, Ports and Shipping Minister Johnston Fernando told the media yesterday.

He also said that 1,500 police officers have been deployed to nab coronavirus patients who are vectors and are evading treatment at government hospitals.

Puttalam District Secretary Chandrasiri Bandara said yesterday that 800 persons who returned recently from Italy and are now living in the Wennappuwa area without being medically checked for Covid-19 are a real threat to the residents of the Puttalam district.

Meanwhile, a special medical centre has been set up at the Chilaw District Hospital to keep the suspected patients in quarantine, the Director of the Chilaw Hospital Dr. Kapila Mallawaarachchi said yesterday.
