The demand for cucumber has increased in the Ampara district due to the prevailing hot weather. Farmers who cultivated cucumber in the Eastern Province have reaped a reasonable harvest this season. Traders said that the sale of melon has doubled because of the prevailing hot weather.

The traders sell a melon weighing around one kilo for Rs.100 to 200. They buy them from farmers who have cultivated them on a large scale in the Batticaloa and Ampara districts. A brisk sale of cucumber was witnessed on the pavements in Sainthamarthu, Nintavur, Karaitheevu, Kalmunai, Maruthamunai, Akkaraipattu, Addalaichenai and Sammanthurai.
