Medicines in abundance to meet public demand - pharma firms

Medicines, health equipment and medical accessories are in full supply, the Sri Lanka Chamber of Pharmaceutical Industries said yesterday.

The Chamber’s Vice-Chairman Sanjiva Wijesekera told the Daily News that they have been informed that the public was buying medicines from pharmacies as if there was a shortage of medicines in the country.

“They may have done so out of fear after the recent diagnosis of Sri Lankan patients with Covid-19, but this situation has not had any impact on the country’s medical supplies to date,” he said. He assured that pharmaceutical importers have buffer stocks that can last for months to meet the people’s medication demands.

“We informed this to Sri Lanka State Pharmaceutical Corporation Chairman Dr. Prasanna Gunasena as well,” said Wijesekara.

Several pharmaceutical companies told this newspaper that their pharmaceutical orders are in place without any disruption, and they have buffer stocks of pharmaceutical and medical items.

Hence, there is no cause for panicking over availability of medicine, they said.
