Ranil writes to President on COVID-19 strategy

United National Party Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has written to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to summon a meeting of all heads of political parties and other relevant stakeholders in order to implement a comprehensive strategy to contain the spread of the COVID-19 virus in Sri Lanka.

In a letter sent on Sunday, which was made available on public domain, Wickremesinghe referring to an article which appeared in the Daily News on Friday, said that there is a need for a plan to be placed before the public to overcome their fear over the spread of the virus.

“I believe a comprehensive acceptable plan needs to be designed not only to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 but also to mitigate the arising socio-economic problems,” he said. “I would request you as an initial measure to summon a meeting of all heads of political parties and other relevant bodies and agencies in order that a comprehensive strategy be evolved, that is acceptable to both the public and all stakeholders.”In his letter, he cited that the upcoming festive season the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, Easter Sunday, Ramazan and the General Elections would likely accelerate the spread of the virus as more people would congregate affecting all sections of the community. The UNP Leader has also written to the Election Commissioner Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya drawing his attention to large crowds that would congregate for election related meetings. “Considering these events and the election campaign, I would be grateful if you could inform us of the proposed steps you intend to take,” he said in a letter.
