UGC to adopt zero tolerance policy

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has will terminate all students of the Sri Jayawardenapura University who were present at the university grounds in the wee hours of March 10, the day that Pasindu Hirushan was critically injured following a brutal ragging incident.

University Grants Commission Chairman Prof. Sampath Amaratunga told the Daily News last night that in addition to the six students already arrested, they are making inquiries as to how many students were at the university premises till late into the night that day and will terminate all present that night.

He said that all students who were present at the playground and other parts of the university on the night and time of the tragedy, will he held responsible for the tragedy, either directly or indirectly.

He said the UGC will adopt a zero tolerance policy. He also said that there was not a single ragging incident during his tenure as Vice Chancellor from November 2014 till January 1, 2020.

Both the University administration and the Police are conducting and will take the stern disciplinary action against all these perpetrators, the UGC Chief said.

“Enough is enough.We will be bringing in some deterrent punishments which are already there in the Anti-Ragging Act,” he said.
