SLAF marks 69 Anniversary, Women’s Day

A series of religious activities were held in Anuradhapura by the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) Seva Vanitha Unit to mark the International Women’s Day and the SLAF 69th Anniversary.

The events started with a Aluth Sahal Mangalya, an ancient ritual of offering the inaugural harvest to the triple gems, on March 7 at the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi under the auspices of Air Force Commander Air Marshal Sumangala Dias and SLAF Seva Vanitha Unit Chairperson Mayuri Prabhavi Dias. The event was organised with the support of the SLAF Station, Morawewa. A Kapruk Poojawa was conducted thereafter at the Ruwanwelisaya. The procession for the Kapruk Poojawa commenced from the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi and proceeded to the Ruwanwelisaya. It was followed by a dharma sermon by Ruwanweli Maha Vihara Wasi Ven. Kudagala Wawe Gnanawimala Thera at the Ruwanwelisaya.

Commander Air Marshal Sumangala Dias participated in a tree planting ceremony by the SLAF Base Anuradhapura. It was held near the Nuwara Wewa.

A dansala was also organised by the SLAF Seva Vanitha Unit at the Ruwanwelisaya. It was organised for those who come to Anuradhapura on pilgrimages. It was followed by a ‘Pahan Pooja’ and a dharma sermon by Ven. Kudagala Wawe Gnanawimala Thera. Over 1,000 lamps were lit symbolising the SLAF 69th Anniversary.

The Seva Vanitha Unit under the supervision of the Chairperson carried out a ‘Chathu Madura’ offering at the Ruwanwelisaya for 35 monks.

Thereafter, an almsgiving was offered for 75 ‘Bhikkunis’ at the Abhayagiriya temple on March 8 morning.
