Minister praises Women’s Development Federation

Mahaweli Development, Agriculture and Trade Minister and Defence Deputy Minister Chamal Rajapaksa said the Women’s Development Federation in Hambantota is the biggest of its kind in the island and it is a tower of strength and a beacon of hope for the women in Sri Lanka.

He was addressing the gathering at an event held at the Singapore Hall in Hambantota on March 7 to mark the International Women’s Day.

The Minister said that the federation has 85,000 members.

“Although ours is a Buddhist society, women and child are abused regularly, the Minister said. He said parents must give a special attention on their children who attend tuition classes as many unruly events occur at them.

The Minister said that women can produce organic fertiliser and earn a sound income as the Department of Agriculture is ready to buy their produce. The women working at indigenous restaurants earn a sound income now, he said. He said that such a place was opened recently at the Hambantota General Hospital and now it has become a money spinner for poor women.

Women’s Development Federation Buddhimandala Chairman J.Weeraratna, Proff. W.H. Kularatna Nelly Mitraratna and Kelaniya University lecturer Ganga Rajini Dissanayaka were present.
