Ban on those leaving for foreign jobs - SLBFE

Sri Lankans will not be permitted to travel abroad for employment until further notice as part of the Government’s ongoing efforts to contain COVID-19.

Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) General Manager W.M.V.Wansekara yesterday told the Daily News that the decision to suspend local citizens from going abroad for foreign employment was taken in consultation

with Foreign Relations, Skills Development Employment and Labor Relations Minister Dinesh Gunawardena and Skills Development Employment and Labor Relations Ministry Secretary D. M. S. Abhayagunawardena.

Wansekara stated that Sri Lankans will be restricted from leaving for foreign employment until COVID-19 is placed under considerable control. He said the decision was taken in keeping with the quarantine process implemented at national level to fight the virus, in which restrictions on local and overseas movements of migrant populations are deemed essential.

“We also took into account the concerns of receiving countries which have already imposed entry restrictions due to the outbreak of the virus,” he explained.
