People’s cooperation pivotal to combat COVID-19 - Deshapriya

There is no obstruction to the holding of the Parliamentary election as scheduled if the people extend their fullest cooperation to successfully combat the COVID-19. This can be done only if the people properly adhered to the advice given by the Health authorities, Elections Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya said.

The Election Commission Chairman expressed these sentiments fielding questions raised by the media at Badulla on March 13.

Deshapriya who stressed the importance of preventing the spreading of the disease to others added that the best way to control it was for all suspected cases to undergo the quarantine procedure without any objection.

He said the Commission had received complaints against the behaviour of certain sections of the mass media and public officials engaging in politics but the use of state vehicles for electioneering had stopped altogether.

He said certain political parties had already informed him about their decision to desist from conducting mass political meetings and gatherings until April 25 due to the unsettled situation.

He said people should stay protected and secure in order for a Parliamentary election to be conducted.
