All universities closed for two weeks

All universities will be closed for two weeks from today as a defensive measure against the spread of new Coronavirus ‘COVID 19’, University Grants Commission Chairman Prof. Sampath Amaratunga said.

He told the Daily News that the situation would be evaluated in two weeks to decide whether to extend the period of closure till the end of the New Year holidays. He said the decision applies to all state universities coming under the UGC, but not other private higher educational institutes. The private educational institutes have to take their own administrative decision on suspending their academic activities.

According to the UGC decision, the Universities have informed the students to vacate the hostels.

Any exams scheduled for next two weeks would also be rescheduled.

The universities will again close for about two weeks for the New Year holidays at the end of first semester towards the second week of April.
