Price control for private sector PCR test

The private sector will be authorised to carry out the PCR blood test after introducing a price control. This test is not a screening test and the test is carried out only in the state sector. It is a diagnostic test. It is done after a case definition done by a qualified consultant, Health Services Director General Dr. Anil Jasinghe said.

Addressing a press conference held at the Government Information Department Auditorium in Colombo yesterday he said that it takes five or six hours to obtain the result of one PCR test and it is available at the Medical Research Institute (MRI), Teaching hospitals such as Karapitiya, Anuradhapura, Kandy National Hospital, and Sri Jayawardenepura University. It will commence at Colombo South Teaching Hospital (Kalubowila) soon. The WHO will provide USD 100,000 worth medical equipment.

According to Dr. Jasinghe, the test will be a profit making business if the government allows the private sector to do it without a price control. The Government is now in the process of controlling COVID-19 and the process needs records of patients, criteria to perform PCR etc because it is a public health exercise.

Stringent criteria is required for it. The private sector is not familiar with it. That is why the issue needs to be carefully analysed and make a decision.

Dr. Jasinghe said five contacts of the first patient and eight contacts of the second patient had been hospitalized.

17 state hospitals are ready to treat suspected patients. No individual arrived from an affected country can skip quarantine process because they are being traced in flights before they land in Sri Lanka and escorted to the relevant area. Now China has reached the end of the epidemic curve with only 27 patients reported yesterday.

There is no threat to Sri Lanka from China. Now the real threat is from Italy, South Korea and Iran.
