Sajin Vass released on previous bail conditions

Former UPFA MP Sajin de Vass Gunawardena who was held in remand custody over the alleged intimidation of witnesses in a money laundering case, was yesterday ordered to released on previously imposed bail conditions by the Colombo High Court.

When the case was taken up before the Colombo High Court Judge Gihan Kulathunaga, Attorney Jeewantha Jayathilaka appearing for Sajin de Vass filed a bail application before court seeking bail to his client stating that his client expects to contest the forthcoming General Election.

Therefore, counsel moved court to release his client on bail to sign the nomination papers and hand over relevant documents to the Election Commission.

Deputy Solicitor General Thusith Mudalige appearing for the Attorney General informed court that there was no objection to the accused being released on bail.

Considering the circumstances, the Colombo High Court Judge ordered to release former MP Sajin de Vass on previously imposed bail conditions.Furthermore, the accused were strictly advised not to interfere with the prosecution witnesses of the case by the Colombo High Court.

The case will be taken up again for further trail on March 17.

MP Sajin de Vass Gunawardena has been indicted by the Attorney General (AG) on the charge of money laundering amounting to over Rs.306.26 million, under Section 3 [1] [a] of Money Laundering Act No 05 of 2006 as amended by Act No 40 of 2011.At a previous hearing, Indictment was handed over to accused and accused was released on a cash bail of Rs. 500,000 and two sureties of Rs. 5 million.
