Tax valuer gets 20 years for soliciting bribe

A senior valuer at the Matara Inland Revenue Department branch who was found guilty for soliciting and accepting a bribe of Rs.10, 000, was yesterday sentenced to 20 years imprisonment by the Colombo High Court.

The accused Hewa Batagodage Jagath, was arrested while soliciting and accepting a bribe of Rs. 10,000 to in June, 2016 from another person to issue a certificate of value less than the appraised value of a land ready for purchase.

He was arrested by officers attached to the Bribery Commission while accepting Rs.10,000 as a bribe.Delivering the verdict following a lengthy trial, High Court Judge Gihan Kulathunga observed that the prosecution had proved the case beyond reasonable doubt. Thereafter, the accused was sentenced to five years imprisonment for four convicted charges and charges were decided to be run concurrently.Accordingly, the total imprisonment period is five years.

He was also ordered to pay a fine of Rs. 20,000 and ordered to pay Rs.10,000 as a penalty that they had accepted as a bribe and another Rs. 25,000 as compensation to the victim by the Colombo High Court.
