The 103rd cricket clash between two of Kandy’s cricket rivals Trinity College and St. Anthony’s College termed the Kandy Battle of the Blues will take place at the Asgiriya Stadium turf wicket today and tomorrow. This is the sixth oldest Big Match in the country and this time both schools are evenly balanced sporting good records for the season going into this match. This game is contested for the John Halangoda memorial trophy.

The trophy is awarded to the team that manages to win the match by means of an outright win or failing that, a first innings win. It was introduced in 2005 in memory of the former Trinity College cricketer and coach who later became the coach of St. Anthony’s College and guided them to a win in 1948. In the series Trinity College leads the overall tally with 23 wins while St. Anthony’s College has won 11. Trinity’s last win came under the captaincy of Niroshan Dickwella in 2012 where they broke a 25-year hoodoo to win by an innings and one run. The Antonians are still to win an encounter this century their last one coming in 1991 under the captaincy of Umesh de Alwis. It is the Trinitians who have dominated the series in the early years to such an extent that they won the ‘Big’ match a record eleven times in a row from 1918 to 1928.

The match will be played under the patronage of Maduranga Munaweera the 2004/05 Trinity captain who won his colors in 2004, and was a member of all the junior age group cricket teams. He also played for the under 19 Kandy District and Central Province teams and later played for Kurunegala YCC. The guest of honor will be 96-year-old Lionel Perera, the oldest living member of the Trinity family, a man who never misses a single match at Asgiriya grounds and has also has not missed a big match since 1932.

This season performance-wise both sides are equal, but anything can happen. It should be said that both sides have failed to throw the game open in the ‘Big’ matches over a long spell.

Trinity College is led by Sri Lanka youth cricketer, Ruvin Pieris, who with his pace bowling has captured 40 wickets this season. He has led the side to win eight matches with the help of cricketers like Abishek Anandakumar, Shane Goonatilake, Randuda Somaratne, Indu Wimaladharma and Matheesha Pathirana against St. Servatius College, St. Joseph Vaz College, St.Sebastian’s College, Richmond College, Zahira College, Lumbini College, Ananda College and Nalanda College tournament games.

St.Anthony’s College is led by Mohamed Kamil a good bat who has scored over 600 runs and has players like Asitha Wanninayake, Anjala Bandara, Nimanka Jayatilake, Gihan Ebert and Sasith Hirudika who have helped them to win seven tournament games against Dharmaraja College, Kingswood College, Moratu Vidyalaya, St. Anne’s College, Dharmasoka College, Dharmapala College and Maliyadeva College.
