BIA taking all precautions

The Bandaranaike International Airport is taking all precautions to halt the entry of COVID-19 infected passengers to Sri Lanka with the assistance of the Tri-Forces, airport staff and quailed medical experts, said Airport said Aviation Services Ltd. (AASL) Chairman G.A. Chandrasiri. This is on a 24 hour basis.

These precautionary measures were taken from January 24 even before most of the more developed airports such as Changi airport in Singapore and other European airports had done so.

He said that passengers currently returning from Italy, South Korea and Iran are sent to the quarantine centres for 14 days. He appealed to the passengers returning from these three countries to cooperate with the authorities as they will be doing a service to their own relatives and fellow Sri Lankans from COVID-19.

He also disclosed that Korean flights to Colombo will be temporarily stopped until further notice from Saturday. (14)

He also said passengers arriving from these countries are first taken to the adjoining domestic airport, sprayed with disinfectants and then taken by fully equipped air-conditioned buses to the Quarantine Centers. “We provide them with food packs that are prepared by SriLankan Airlines Catering.”

Asked why passengers arriving from China are not sent to the Quarantine Centers, he said that this is because there is a sharp decline in the spread of the virus in China as against the other three countries. He also said that even the waste from the Colombo bound flights are been incinerated within half an hour under international regulations to ensure contamination. Another official from the AASL said that while most Sri Lankan returnees from South Korea and Iran are cooperating well with the authorities at the Airport, some returning Sri Lankans are reluctant to do so. He said that they do not relax this checking procedure even at night or in the early hours of the morning and this scanning process is a 24 hour operation, executed with great planning.
